YOUR MASSAGE TREATMENT
A natural way to feel better
Massage has been shown to increase “feel good” neurotransmitters such as oxytocin and serotonin. These are involved in the control of mood, behaviour, hormones, sleep, memory, appetite, learning, temperature, circulation and muscle contraction. Some Antidepressant medications work by increasing serotonin levels. At the same time massage decreases cortisol, often called “the stress hormone”. Prolonged high levels of which can lead to health problems, including digestive disorders, decreased bone and muscle tissue, high blood pressure, insomnia and lowered immunity.
The benefits of massage have been recognised throughout history around the world:
Deep tissue and stretching techniques ease away tension, reduce pain and increase range of movement. To ancient Greek and Roman physicians massage was one of the principal means of healing. Hippocrates (460 – 370 BC, the ‘father’ of modern medicine) wrote “the physician must be experienced in many things, but assuredly in rubbing.... For rubbing can bind a joint that is too loose, and loosen a joint that is too rigid.”
Carefully applied pressure to tense muscles, especially at the attachments and trigger points, causes them to relax. Trigger points, which are particularly painful areas that refer pain to other parts of the body, are released. Excessively tight muscles can restrict lymph flow, impeding the removal of waste materials causing congestion.
The Arab philosopher Avicenna (980–1037) wrote that the object of massage was “to disperse the effete matters found in the muscles and not expelled by exercise”.

Firstly, a consultation is done to determine the kind of treatment best suited to you. Everyone is different, so you choose how much pressure is needed and whether you want to include stretching techniques. Only good quality organic oils are used. You may also wish to enhance your treatment with Aromatherapy oils which have many different beneficial effects. You will be given time to undress to your underwear and lie on the couch covered with clean towels. Then all you have to do is relax and enjoy!
Most people feel wonderful after a treatment, relaxed and uplifted. To gain maximum benefit from your massage spend as much time as you can just relaxing. It is a good idea to drink water to help flush away any toxins that have been released.
I can offer advice on stretching exercises that will help with particularly tense areas that you may have.
