REFLEXOLOGY - A BRIEF HISTORY
Reflexology-like therapy existed in ancient Egypt, India and China, but it was not until the twentieth century that Reflexology as we know it today was developed. Dr William Fitzgerald, an American ear nose and throat specialist, noticed that pressure on specific areas of the body produced an anaesthetising effect on a related area. He divided the body into ten zones ending in the feet and hands. In the 1930's Eunice Ingham, a massage therapist, refined Dr Fitzgerald's theory. She observed that problems in any part of the body were mirrored in reflex points on the feet and hands, and that treating these reflexes had a therapeutic effect on corresponding areas of the body.
WHAT TO EXPECT FROM A TREATMENT
Reflexology encourages the healing process throughout your body and mind by releasing blocked energy and restoring balance. Clients report feelings of positivity, vitality and calm after their reflexology treatment. It can be a very useful tool to help you through difficult times and to maintain a general sense of well-being, as it is deeply relaxing and relatively non-invasive. If you are dealing with particular problems weekly sessions are advised, usually four to six. After that many people like to continue with monthly treatments. One-off treatments can provide a much needed energy boost and balance.
YOUR TREATMENT
Firstly you complete a consultation form to ascertain the kind of treatment best suited to you. After you have removed your footwear you can and lie back on the couch and relax! Reflexology consists of massage and pressure techniques applied to your feet and most people find this very pleasurable and relaxing, many even dropping off to sleep! The treatment takes about forty five minutes to one hour.
AFTER YOUR TREATMENT
In order to gain maximum benefit from your treatment its best to relax and drink plenty of water to help flush away released toxins. Most people feel really geat after a treatment, but because Reflexology can be such a powerful cleanser a very few may experience cold like symptoms for a short while. This is called a ‘healing crisis’ and is a good sign that blockages have been cleared, and the treatment is working. It is advisable to avoid toxins such as tea, coffee, alcohol and smoking for a few hours. Eat a light meal that’s not too rich and spicy. Relax as much as possible, some people find a gentle walk helpful.
